It is used for treatment of arthritis, omphalitis, listeriosis, Septicemia, gastrointestinal infections, respiratory tract infections, urogenital tract infections, anthrax, tetanus, gas gangrene, malignant edema, leptospirosis, botulism, strangles, preoperative treatments and secondary infection caused by penicillin sensitive micro-organisms.
Mechanism of action:
Penicillin G exerts a bactericidal action against penicillin-susceptible microorganisms during the stage of active multiplication. It acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell-wall mucopeptide. Penicillin G is active against many gram-positive and a limited number of gram-negative bacteria however not active against the penicillinase-producing bacteria.
The drug is distributed widely in the body tissues and highest levels are found in the kidneys with lower amounts in the liver, skin, and intestines. Penicillin G penetrates into all other tissues to a lesser degree at a very small level found in the cerebrospinal fluid. With normal kidney function, the drug is excreted rapidly by tubular excretion.
