Pharmacology:
Penicillins are an antibiotic of the ß-lactam class and kanamycin belongs to the aminoglycosides. Penicillins act by interfering with the formation of the bacteria’s cell wall while it is growing. This weakens the cell wall and kills the bacteria. Penicillin G is active against many gram-positive and a limited number of gram-negative bacteria. Aminoglycosides display bactericidal activity against most gram-negative bacteria, but not against gram-negative anaerobes and most gram-positive bacteria. These activities are attributed to a primary mode of action as protein synthesis inhibitors. The combination of penicillin G procaine and Kanamycin acts synergistic. It is active against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
