Gentalak® 5%

Sterile injectable solution

Therapeutically classification: Antibiotic

Composition: Each ml contains:

Gentamicin (sulfate) 50 mg

Target species: Cattle, Calves, Horses, Foals, Sheep, Goats, Cats and Dogs

Indications:

Gentalak® 5% is used for treatment of infectious diseases caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria susceptible to gentamicin such as respiratory tract infections, gastric and intestinal infections (colibacillosis, salmonellosis), urogenital tract infections (like metritis and pyometra), skin and wound infections, septicemia, bacteremia, arthritis, omphalitis and otitis.

Mechanism of action:

Gentamicin like other aminoglycoside antibiotics by binding to 30S ribosomal subunit and preventing the synthesis of bacterial proteins, has bactericidal effect mainly on gram negative bacteria such as E.coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteous spp., Pseudomonas spp., Salmonella spp., Enterobacter spp., Seratia and Shigella spp. It also affects some Staphylococci and Streptococci.

Dosage & Administration:

5 mg/kg B.W. (1 ml / 10 kg B.W.), each 12 hours in first day, then once daily for 3-5 days by IM or slow IV injection and in dogs and cats can be administered by SC, too.

Withdrawal time:

Milk: 3 days after the last treatment

Meat: 7 days after the last treatment

 

Contra-indications:

Do not use in animals with hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides.

Adverse effects include nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity and neuromuscular blockade.

Risk factors for nephrotoxicity: preexisting renal disorders (such as compromised renal function, renal insufficiency, kidney disease or renal failure), age (neonatal or geriatric), fever, sepsis and dehydration.

Do not use with loop diuretics like furosemide.

Do not use in pregnant animals.

Caution:

It is better that not be administered to food animals because of residue concerns.

Do not mix with other drugs and antibiotics.

Keep out of reach and sight of children.

Use only under the prescription of a veterinarian.

Storage:

Do not store above 25°C, keep away from light and freezing
