Sterile Injectable Solution

Therapeutically classification: Steroidal anti-inflammatory

Composition: Each ml contains:

Dexamethasone (sodium phosphate)

Target species: Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Goats, Dogs and Cats

Indications:

Dexalak® 0.2% is used for the treatment of ketosis in cattle (acetonaemia), pregnancy toxemia in sheep, shock and stress, noninfectious arthritis, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, vaginitis, acute bovine pulmonary emphysema and edema, atypical pneumonia in cattle, induction of parturition in cattle, sheep and goats especially when calving is delayed.

Mechanism of actions:

Dexamethasone is derivative of fluoro-methylprednisolone which exhibits potent gluconeogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-shock properties.

Dosage and administration:

This drug is used to IM, IV, SC, intra- articular injection.

Cattle:

Anti-inflammatory dose: 0.04-0.15 mg/kg B.W. (minimum 2 ml/100 kg B.W), daily by IM or IV injection

Induction of parturition: 0.05 mg/kg B.W. (minimum 2.5 ml/100 kg B.W.), single dose by IM injection

Treatment of ketosis: 0.01-0.04 mg/kg B.W. (minimum 0.5 ml/100 kg B.W), daily by IM or IV injection

Sheep and Goats:

Induction of parturition: 0.15 mg/kg B.W. (1.5 ml/20 kg B.W.), daily for 1-5 days during the last week of gestation by IM injection.

Horses:

Anti-inflammatory dose: 0.04-0.15 mg/kg B.W. (minimum 2 ml/100 kg B.W), daily by IM or IV injection.

Intra-articular injection in horses and cattle: 2-10 mg (1-5 ml)

Dogs and Cats:

Anti-inflammatory dose: 0.07-0.15 mg/kg B.W. (minimum 0.2 ml/10 kg B.W), every 12-24 hours by IM or IV injection

Note: These doses are advocated dependent on the size of the animal, the duration of the signs and supervision of the veterinarian.

Withdrawal time:

Milk: 84 hours after the last treatment

Meat: 21 days after the last treatment

Adverse reaction:

High, continued doses can cause suppression of adrenocortical function.

The use of dexamethasone in horses has caused laminitis under certain conditions, possibly due to increased vascular response to biogenic amines.

Drug interactions:

Prescription of this drug is not recommended with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Contra-indications:

This drug should not be used in case of infection without the use of antibiotics.

Do not recommended in the last trimester of pregnancy in cattle, because there is the possibility of dystocia or abortion.

Caution:

Keep out of reach and sight of children.

Use only under the prescription of a veterinarian.

28 days after first needle insertion

Storage:

Do not store above 25°C, keep away from light and freezing.
