Doxycycline (Hyclate)

500

mg

Target species: Poultry (Broilers, Breeders, pullets) and Turkeys

Bay Doxy® 50% is used for treatment of Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) (caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum), systemic colibacillosis (caused by E. coli), air sacculitis, polyarthritis (caused by Mycoplasma synoviae), fowl cholera (Pasteurella multocida), necrotic enteritis (caused by Clostridium spp.), infectious coryza (caused by Haemophilus spp.), Salmonellosis, infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci, ornithosis and chlamydosis.

Mechanism of action:

Doxycycline belongs to the group of tetracyclines and has bacteriostatic action against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Doxycycline binds to 30s ribosomal subunit of the bacteria and inhibits the protein synthesis, thus does not allow the bacteria to grow and divide. The drug is primarily excreted into the feces via non-urinary routes so it can be used in animals with renal dysfunction.

Dosage & Administration:

Poultry: 20-40 mg per Kg B.W. or 200-400 g per 1000 liters of drinking water for 3 to 5 days

Turkeys: 20-40 g per 100 liters of drinking water for 3 to 5 days

Withdrawal times:

Poultry: 6 days after the last treatment.

Turkeys: 8 days after the last treatment.

Do not administer with bactericidal antibiotics like betalactams, cephalosporins and aminoglycosides.

Contra-indications:

Do not use in animal with hypersensitivity to tetracyclines.

Do not use in poultry that produce eggs for human consumption.

In general, tetracyclines chelate divalent or trivalent cations such as calcium, iron, magnesium and aluminum, hence concurrent administration of antacids or other drugs containing these cations, kaolin, pectin, bismuth subsalicylate and sodium bicarbonate, decreases gastrointestinal absorption of tetracycline, although doxycycline is least affected.

Caution:

Should be used within 72 hours after opening the sachet.

Medicated water should be used within 24 hours.

At the vet’s discretion, doxycycline can be used concomitantly with tylosin, Tiamulin, colistin, bacitracin, sulfonamides, florfenicol and lincomycin.

Keep out of reach and sight of children.

Use only under the prescription of a veterinarian.
